About this tool

Most PDF forms are made to be filled in on screen. Their fields — text boxes, tick boxes, drop-down lists and option buttons — are listed above the pages with readable names, so you can work through them without hunting around the page. If a PDF has no fields at all, such as a scanned letter, you can still place text anywhere on it.

Your signature is kept as a clean, transparent image, cropped to the ink, so it sits on the page like real ink rather than in a white box. Typed signatures use Dancing Script, a handwriting font that is included with this site rather than fetched from another company’s servers.

Ticking “Lock the answers” flattens the form: your answers become part of the page and can no longer be edited, which is what many offices ask for when a form is returned. Leave it unticked if you or someone else will need to change an answer later.

What this makes is an electronic signature — a picture of your signature on the document — which is what most everyday agreements, applications and consent forms ask for. It is not a certificate-based digital signature, the kind that cryptographically proves who signed and that nothing changed afterwards. If a document specifically asks for a digital signature or a signing certificate, use the tool the sender recommends.

Frequently asked questions

Is a signature added this way legally valid?

An electronic signature added this way is legally valid for most everyday agreements in many countries, including under the US ESIGN Act and the EU’s eIDAS regulation. Some documents — certain property, court or notarised papers — have stricter rules. If you are unsure, ask whoever asked you to sign.

Can I fill in a PDF that has no form fields?

Yes, Sign & Fill PDF can add text to a PDF that has no form fields: type the text, press “Place text” and click where it should go on the page. Use it for names, dates, addresses or ticks; “Today’s date” fills in the date for you.

Is my signature stored anywhere?

No, a signature made in Sign & Fill PDF is not stored anywhere: it exists only in your browser tab while you work and is gone when you close the page. Neither your signature nor your document is uploaded.

Why can’t I add emoji or text in some languages?

Sign & Fill PDF cannot add emoji or text in some languages because it writes text with the standard font every PDF reader has built in, which covers English and most European languages. Characters outside it, such as emoji or Chinese, Arabic or Cyrillic script, would need a font embedded in the file, which this tool does not do yet.
