WebP was designed as a single replacement for both JPG and PNG. It compresses photographs better than JPG, and unlike JPG it supports transparency — so a PNG logo or cut-out converted to WebP keeps its transparent background while dropping a large share of its file size.
Browsers encode WebP lossily at every quality setting, including 100%, so tiny differences from the PNG are possible. On photographs they are invisible; on pixel art or screenshots with fine text, check the preview at full size before replacing your originals.

How much smaller will my files be?

Is the conversion lossless?
No, PNG to WebP conversion in a browser is not lossless, because browsers only offer lossy WebP encoding, even at 100% quality. The difference is invisible on most images, but keep your PNG originals if you need an exact copy.
Can I convert WebP back to PNG?
