About this tool
JPG throws away a little detail every time it is saved. If you are going to edit an image several times — cropping, annotating, adding text — converting it to PNG first stops that loss from piling up, because PNG stores every pixel exactly.
What conversion cannot do is undo the compression already in the JPG. The PNG looks exactly like the JPG it came from, blocky patches included. It will also be larger, often three to five times, because lossless storage of a photograph is expensive.
PNG is also the right choice when a site or app insists on it, or when you plan to add transparency later — a JPG has no transparency at all, so cut-outs have to start from a PNG.
Frequently asked questions
Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?
No, converting JPG to PNG does not improve quality: the PNG is a pixel-for-pixel copy of the JPG, compression artefacts and all. What it does do is stop any further loss, so later edits and saves keep the image exactly as it is now.
Why is my PNG so much bigger than the JPG?
A PNG is much bigger than the JPG it came from because JPG discards detail to stay small, while PNG keeps every pixel. Storing a photograph losslessly typically takes three to five times the space. For sharing photos, JPG or WebP is the better choice.
Will the PNG have a transparent background?
No, a PNG converted from a JPG has no transparent background, because a JPG has no transparency to carry over. To cut the background out of a photo, use Klonum’s Icon Maker, which can remove backgrounds and export a transparent PNG.
Can I convert back to JPG?
Yes, a PNG converts back to JPG with Klonum’s PNG to JPG converter, which the Reverse button on the JPG to PNG page opens, and where you can also choose the quality and a colour for any transparent areas.
